War Resistor & Political Prisoner Coalition Forming

Members of Jericho & ICFFMAJ are joining with other activists and organizations to create an event connecting the struggles for War Resisters and Political Prisoners. We are currently sending out the following letter to many organizations and individuals. Be a part of this effort! Use this international energy of resistance-- from Egypt to Wisconsin-- to continue building and connecting our common cause of LIBERATION!

We're impressed with your work and are interested in building a coalition to organize an event around the common struggles of those imprisoned and persecuted for resisting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and of US political prisoners. Many of the over 100 US political prisoners were arrested for, or in connection with, overtly anti-imperialist, anti-war acts and as a result have spent decades in jail. We feel that there is a common thread in the struggles of those who have been arrested for resisting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and with those activists who have been targeted by COINTELPRO and imprisoned on false allegations.

We invite your organization to share your thoughts and ideas and build with us. Let's create something together that not only educates, but strategically organizes towards our mutual goals of peace, justice, and freedom for our incarcerated comrades.

Please join us at 7:30pm on Monday, March 7th at the A-Space at 4722 Baltimore Ave. in Philadelphia. We plan to meet every other week until the date of the event. If you are unable to make meetings but would still like to plug into the event we can work to accommodate you. We look forward to hearing from you and working with you in the future!

Just as Bradley Manning has been grossly mistreated for leaking documents regarding US military operations, US political Leonard Peltier was targeted and wrongfully imprisoned due to his work exposing US atrocities against the Native American population. US political prisoner David Gilbert and many other political prisoners were deeply involved in struggles against the Vietnam war. As their work escalated into more radical anti-imperialist efforts they were arrested and have been incarcerated for decades. Political Prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal has continuously written articles from death row exposing the illegalities of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and in support of those imprisoned for resisting war.

The idea for this event was initiated by members of the International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal. Members of the group hoped to have the event coincide with Mumia's birthday (and anniversary of the passage of the Effective Death Penalty Act) on April 24th. Though this effort was initiated by International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal, the War Resisters/Political Prisoner Alliance is a coalition effort and all groups or individuals present at planning meetings will have an equal voice.
